What is Clinical Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is an education and communication process by which the conscious and unconscious minds agree.
Clinical Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy is the use of an altered state of consciousness, or trance, for therapeutic sessions. This means people are not treated with hypnosis; they are treated in a hypnotic state or altered State of awareness.
The Critical Faculty is the part of the mind that passes judgement. This is usually set up around the age of 7, through our patterns, beliefs, behaviours, attitudes, epigenetics and taking on the beliefs of others. What we are told is ‘true’. They are preconceived notions that may not even be our own and may be holding us back from achieving our full potential. They are thought forms that may be outdated and outmoded and no longer serve our highest good. Yet they are embedded and need to be brought out of their closet to be polished and reviewed. They evoke Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic, Gustatory and Olfactory senses. They are Deletions, Distortions, Generalizations, Values, Beliefs, Rules, Expectations, and Collective Views & Identity. They may not be real but what our mind creates and may prove to be quite malevolent in nature. ‘It distinguishes between the impressions of hot/cold, sweet/sour, large/small, dark/light.’
‘State of Mind’ of Hypnosis enables hypnosis to take place and Critical Faculty bypassed. It is a state of consciousness where the client is able to hear and know what the therapist is saying and forget the positive suggestion offered.
The clients’ senses become heightened or decreased but they will still have control over their body and mind. It is a chance for the unconscious mind to release new information to the client allowing things such as positivity, memories, Past-lives, experiences and latent talents to bubble up to the surface in order to assist the client in moving through blocks/changing habits and behaviours and thoughts. The effectiveness will depend on many things including the clients’ susceptibility to hypnosis, motivation, defences, power of suggestion and rapport with therapist.
If the client is willing to accept suggestions only then can they be selective in what is suggested to them. It the client is not will to take a suggestion they will refuse it, even though Critical Faculty is bypassed. The client is still in charge of what they accept and what they do not.
Generative Trance Work assists the client to find internal resources to become empowered. It is designed to move the client from their present state of consciousness to their specific goal by the hypnotherapist creating a metaphor in their own language. The unconscious mind is then able to find solutions and resources to provide healing and bring new wisdom into their reality.
Telling the client where they are now and then complimenting them on having already achieved their goal is a form of praise for the unconscious mind.
– The self – ‘Who Am I?’ It is the search of every man.
It is represented through all our bodies Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual. It transcends life, death and rebirth. Its dual functions are preservation and growth. It needs to be in constant change to grow. It reflects its outer world.
- A detachment from what is going on around us. It is a natural state that we enter into many times a day. It may be triggered by trauma, memories for example. Intentional trance: hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis.
– Bypasses Critical Factor or judgment and creates a space for selective thinking.
Levels of Trance
1st Level: Light Trance
– your body is relaxed, and your hearing can become more acute to the sounds around you.
2nd Level: Medium Trance
- your body is even more relaxed, you are aware of external sounds but are becoming more focused on internal thoughts and feelings.
3rd Level: Deep Trance
– this is the most profound level of relaxation where you can hear but just can’t be bothered responding to normal external influences as you focus your attention on your internal reality. You can hear me and if you need to open your eyes at any level. I find my clients usually choose the deepest level of relaxation and enjoy the experience more each time they do.
Any of the clients’ behaviours, emotions and attitudes can be used to induce a trance state. The therapist can communicate more easily if they are utilising the clients own language, as it is familiar to the clients unconscious mind and they are more comfortable with it.
- Waking Hypnosis/Conversational Hypnosis
It’s important to build rapport. If we don’t have a rapport with our client they will build resistance and treatment will fail.
